Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro are the same operating system with a different list of unlocked features. Both get the same updates on the same day, run the same apps and games, and look identical on the desktop. Pro adds a handful of business and power-user tools: BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, Group Policy and the ability to join a company domain or Azure AD. If you never touch those, Home is all you need. If even one of them sounds useful, Pro costs very little more as a license key and the upgrade takes ten minutes.

What Pro actually gives you
BitLocker
BitLocker encrypts the whole drive so that a stolen laptop is just a stolen laptop. Home has a lighter “device encryption” that only works on some hardware and only with a Microsoft account. If the PC ever leaves the house with anything private on it, this alone justifies Pro.
Remote Desktop host
With Pro you can connect to the PC from another computer, a Mac or a phone and use it as if you were sitting in front of it. Home can connect out to other machines but cannot be the machine you connect to. Anyone who works from two places wants this.
Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox
Hyper-V runs a second operating system in a window: a test copy of Windows, a Linux VM, an old program that only runs on Windows 7. Sandbox is simpler: a disposable desktop for opening a file you do not trust, deleted the moment you close it.
Group Policy
Hundreds of settings that are not in the Settings app: delaying feature updates, disabling OneDrive, turning off telemetry, locking the lock screen. Power users spend a lot of time in the registry trying to do on Home what Group Policy does in two clicks on Pro.
Domain and Azure AD join
If your employer manages PCs centrally, the machine has to be Pro. Home cannot join a domain at all.
What Home does just as well
Everything else. Gaming performance is identical. Office, browsers, creative apps and games do not care which edition they run on. Windows Security is the same. Updates arrive at the same time. If the machine is for browsing, streaming, school work and games, Home is the right choice and the money is better spent elsewhere.
Which should you buy?
Buy Windows 11 Home for a family PC, a student laptop or a gaming build that never leaves the house. Buy Windows 11 Pro for anything used for work, anything that travels, anything you want to reach remotely, and for yourself if you like to control what Windows does. The price difference between the two keys in our store is about two dollars, which makes Pro the default answer when you are unsure.
How to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro
You do not reinstall. Open Settings > System > Activation, click Change product key, enter a Windows 11 Pro key and let Windows restart. Files, apps and settings stay exactly where they were; the Pro features appear after the reboot. The whole process takes about ten minutes and is covered step by step in our Windows 11 activation guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Windows 11 Pro faster than Home?
No. Same kernel, same drivers, same performance. The only difference is which features are switched on.
Can I use a Windows 10 Pro key on Windows 11?
Yes. Windows 10 and 11 keys are interchangeable within the same edition: a Windows 11 Pro key also activates Windows 10 Pro and vice versa.
Do I need Pro for gaming?
No. Every gaming feature is in Home.
Does Pro need a Microsoft account?
No. Pro lets you set up with a local account; Home requires a Microsoft account during the initial setup.
